Using an iPhone or iPad as a camera

A spare iPhone or iPad can watch, record and alert like a Mac, while the app is open on it.

Open OdinCam on the spare device, tap +, and choose Use This iPhone as a Camera. It joins your household's cameras: your other devices see its events, alerts, Live View and clips, end-to-end encrypted like a Mac's.

The device must already be in your household. Open one of your cameras in the app first and add the device to its household.

iOS only lets an app use the camera while it is on screen. Leaving the app, locking the device, or a phone call stops the camera, and it starts again when you come back. To keep it from being left by accident, use Guided Access:

  • Turn it on in Settings › Accessibility › Guided Access.
  • Open camera mode, then triple-click the side (or Home) button and tap Start.
  • Triple-click again and enter the passcode to end it.

Keep the device plugged in. The screen dims itself after half a minute; tap to wake it. If it gets too hot, the camera stops and says so, so it can cool down. Clips stay on the device and older ones are deleted automatically.
