CPU use and performance
Some CPU while monitoring is expected — the pre-roll buffer is always encoding.
The Diagnostics panel reports frame rate, dropped frames, CPU and memory for this machine specifically. Trust it over any general estimate.
Video is being compressed the whole time monitoring is active, because that's what makes pre-roll possible. Expect steady, modest use while monitoring rather than nothing.
If frames are being dropped or the fans are up:
- Turn off the person filter, which is the most expensive optional feature on Intel Macs.
- Reduce the camera resolution.
- Shorten the pre-roll.
- Turn off the timestamp overlay.
Dropped frames climbing steadily is the signal that the machine is genuinely behind, rather than merely busy.
